The reporting backlog is a modelling problem, not a tooling problem
Organizations keep buying better BI tools to fix a queue of report requests. The queue is a symptom. The cause is that nobody has agreed what the numbers mean.

Every enterprise we talk to has the same artefact somewhere: a list of report requests, months long, owned by a small team that everyone likes and nobody can get time from. The usual response is to buy a better tool, or a self-service tool, or an AI assistant that promises to let anyone ask questions of the data. Six months later the list is the same length.
The backlog persists because each request is really two requests. The visible one is a chart. The invisible one is a decision about definitions: what counts as a customer, when revenue is recognized, which system is the source of truth when two disagree. When those decisions have not been made once and encoded, every report has to make them again. That is where the time goes, and no tool removes it.
What a semantic model actually buys you
A semantic model is the layer where those definitions live: measures, dimensions and relationships expressed once and reused by every report, every dashboard and, increasingly, every AI assistant. When it exists and is trusted, a new report is assembly rather than research. When it does not, every analyst is a small, undocumented data warehouse.
The organizations that clear their backlog for good tend to do three things in order. They pick the ten measures that leadership argues about and settle each one with a named owner. They build those measures into one model and route all reporting through it, retiring the extracts. Only then do they open the model to self-service — because self-service on ungoverned data is a faster way to produce disagreement.

A practical test
Ask three people in your organization for last month's revenue and see how many answers come back. If it is more than one, the problem is not the tool, and the next tool will not fix it. Start with the definitions.
